Bruno Mars sweeps the 60th Annual Grammy Awards

Bruno Mars was the biggest winner at the 60th Annual Grammy Awards hosted this year at Madison Square Garden in New York City winning in all six categories he contended.
He swept the general field categories with "24K Magic" winning album of the year, "That's What I like" taking song of the year with his album's title track claiming record of the year. He won three awards at the premiere ceremony before the main telecast- best R&B album for "24K Magic" and R&B performance and R&B song for "That's What I Like."

"24K Magic" also won the best engineered album, non-classical award (but Mars was not a credited engineer on the album).

Another big winner was Kendrick Lamar claiming five out of seven of his races. He won three prizes at the premiere ceremony  for rap song, rap performance and music video, all for "HUMBLE." His collaboration with Rihanna, "LOYALTY." won best rap/sung performance and his "DAMN." won best rap album on the main telecast.

Country star Chris Stapleton swept the country categories by taking album ("From a Room: Volume 1"), song ("Broken Halos") and solo performance ("Either Way"). Little Big Town collected the country genre's only other award for duo/group performance.

Other notable multiple winners include Ed Sheeran who picked up Grammys in the only two categories he was nominated: pop solo performance ("Shape of You") and pop vocal album ("Divide"). Double winners were seen at the premiere ceremony across the many genre fields including CeCe Winans in the gospel field, Jason Isbell in the american roots categories, Jennifer Hidgon in classical and Justin Hurwitz in visual media.

Interboro alum nominated for two CMT Music Awards

A few Delco natives are making their way to the CMT (Country Music Television) Music Awards on June 8 after earning a pair of nominations for a music video they directed and produced.

Interboro High School alumni Steve Condon, Danielle Porter-Condon and Steve Molineux are nominated for breakthrough video of the year and group/duo video of the year for Old Dominion’s first major single “Break up With Him,” a video produced through their Nashville-based production company The 10:10 Creative.

“It’s incredible,” said Steve Condon, regularly known as Director Steve, about his first major nomination for his music video work. “This is the band’s first major video, it’s pretty great to know that this is just (Old Dominion and I’s) first shot and it’s up for two.”

Condon and Old Dominion’s love for the 80’s comedy/sci-fi blockbuster “Back to the Future” was the inspiration for the video. Old Dominion lead singer Matthew Ramsey serenades his love interest as she is stuck dancing with a Biff-like character at a dance reminiscent of the film's iconic enchantment under the sea high school gala (renamed entanglement above the heart dance for the video). Ramsey eventually gets his girl as, err, "drive" off to a life of happiness, and in a DeLorean, no less.

'Symphony at the Movies' not a box office smash

There's nothing like hearing memorable film scores being performed live by a full orchestra.

The sweeping sounds of the strings cradle you up in a blanket of happiness as they usher you away from your seat to memories of your favorite stories and characters. Pounding of drums remind us of epics, like Judah Ben-Hur rowing in the gallies in "Ben-Hur" as the drumming ceases to slow. The low, deep moans of the double basses send chills like we're in an old haunted house.

Great music and great moments.

"Gone With the Wind," "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Psycho" are in the top five in a list of the greatest film scores published by the American Film Institute, yet none of these scores, nor anything from their respective composers, filled the Upper Darby Performing Arts Center at a recent performance.

During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips.  Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category.  The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.  A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.  A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. PT at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

The 88th Oscars^® will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre^® at Hollywood & Highland Center^® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.  The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

CBS This Morning to kick off 58th Grammy Nominations announcement

The Recording Academy announced Wednesday morning specifics on how nominees will be announced for the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.

On Dec. 7, the nominees in the general field categories (record of the year, album of the year, song of the year and best new artist) will be announced live on CBS This Morning at 8:15, with the nominees in 79 categories to be announced through a press release at 8:30 and on Grammy.com.

This year's announcement will be far quicker than last year's, where it was an all day affair starting in the morning, with sporadic announcements made through the afternoon. The album of the year nominations were announced live that night, with a complete list of nominees announced soon after.

Over 21,000 submissions were received for the annual kudos fest honoring the best in music for the calendar year running from Oct. 1, 2014 to Sept. 31, 2015.

The 58th Annual Grammy Awards airs live on CBS on Feb. 15, 2016.

Kendrick Lamar, Taylor Swift lead 2015 MTV VMA nominations

Some "Bad Blood" equals a plethora of nominations for Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar at the MTV Video Music Awards 32nd kudos fest honoring music videos.

The hit collaboration earned seven nominations for the iconic Moonman statute, including video of the year and best collaboration. "Bad Blood" also earned five professional nominations- best art direction, cinematography, direction, editing and visual effects.

Lamar was the biggest nominee of the year, tying Lady Gaga's 2010 record for most nominations in a single year with 13. In addition to "Bad Blood", his solo effort "Alright" will also contend for video of the year. This is the first time, again, since Lady Gaga in 2010, that one artist had two videos contend for the top award.

"Alright" is also up for male video, hip-hop video and direction. His collaboration with Flying Lotus on "Never Catch Me" was nominated for choreography and cinematography.

Swift comes up with the second most nominations this year with nine. The aforementioned seven for "Bad Blood" and best female video and pop video for "Blank Space". 

This marks the highest number of nominations for either Swift or Lamar in a given year, garnering respective total  career nominations of 15 and 16.

Rounding out the top category is "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran. The video earned four nominations for Sheeran, who earned two more for his "Don't" video in below the belt categories.

The 2015 MTV Video Music Awards air live on August 30 with last year's video of the year winner, Miley Cyrus, hosting.

Beck Upsets to Win Top Prize at Grammys, Sam Smith Wins Four

In the biggest upset of the night, Beck's "Morning Phase" took the award for album of the year at the 57th Grammy Awards.

The rocker's set defeated front-runners like Beyonce's self-titled set and Sam Smith's "In the Lonely Hour".

"Morning Phase" also won best rock album and engineered album, non-classical at the award show. Nominated for four awards, Beck lost in the rock song and rock performance categories.

Beyoncé did end up with a trio of awards to bring her overall haul to 20; R&B song and R&B performance for "Drunk in Love" and surround sound album for "Beyoncé". 

English crooner Smith won three of his general field bids: best new artist and song and record of the year for "Stay With Me (Darkchild Version)". Smith also won pop vocal album.

While Pharrell Williams was nominated three times for album of the year — for his album "GIRL" and producing "Beyoncé" and Ed Sheeran's "X" — he missed out in this race but won must video for "Happy" and pop solo performance for a live version of the track, the first male to win the latter category. "GIRL" edged out "Beyoncé" in the urban contemporary album race.

Sam Smith, Beyonce, Pharrell Lead Nominations for 57th Annual Grammy Awards

Beyonce, Pharrell Williams and Sam Smith lead the pack with six nominations each for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards.

English singer-songwriter Smith earned nominations in all four categories in the general field. His freshmen set In The Lonely Hour earned nominations for album of the year and best pop album, with record and song of the year nominations for his breakout song "Stay With Me (Darkchild version)" and a pop solo performance nod as well.

The crooner also earned a best new artist nomination.

When nominations start to be announced in about 20 of the 82 categories from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. EST,  Beyonce only heard her name announced once, for best urban contemporary album for her self-titled set Beyonce. But when the full list came out at 2 p.m., she earned four more nods: best R&B performance and R&B song for "Drunk In Love", best surround sound album for Beyonce and best music film for "Beyonce & Jay-Z: On The Run Tour".

When album of the year was announced during the Grammy Christmas concert on CBS that night, she earned her sixth nomination of the year in that category. This is her second nomination in the category for her own work after I am... Sasha Fierce in 2010 - she was nominated the year after as a featured artist on Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster.

After this year's slate of nominations, Beyonce is now the most nominated women ever in Grammy history with 52 individual nods. Dolly Parton now has the second most with 46.

Williams, who was nominated for seven Grammys last year, winning four, earned three nominations for album of the year - as a featured artist on Beyonce and Ed Sheeran's X, and for his solo album Girl. He contends for urban contemporary album for his set, and also pop solo performance and music video for "Happy (Live)".

Aside from Smith's In The Lonely Hour, the only other album of the year nominee Williams didn't contribute to is Beck's Morning Phase. Williams won this category last year as a featured artist on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories.

Coming up quick in the nominations tally is another best new artist nominee, Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea. She earned two nominations for her hit song "Fancy": record of the year and best pop duo/group performance. Her album The New Classic earned a nomination for best rap album.

Nicki Minaj Releases "Anaconda" Video, Taylor Swift and Gaga announce new albums.

Nicki Minaj, who has slowly been releasing singles from her upcoming album Pinkprint released the ass-tastic video to her Sir Mix-A-Lot ripped second single "Anaconda". The video is a plethora of twerking that ends with a her teasing Drake while a giddy one-sided conversation about big asses by Minaj plays. Full of ass, gorgeous women, and good eye candy.

Album Review: Not Falling In Love With Kylie's 'Kiss Me Once'

For over 25 years Kylie Minogue has been a staple of pop/dance music. With her 12th studio album Kiss Me Once, her first album since 2010's Aphrodite, Minogue shows no sign of wanting to stop making the world dance, but at 45 she appears to be slowing down on this latest set, yet more focused on sex at the same time.

Since Aphrodite, Minogue has teased us with high energy tracks like "Timebomb" and "Skirt," and then doing an intimate, orchestra cover album called The Abbey Road Sessions. These were all delightful releases but now we have this, a compilation of slower dance tracks and a step backward for the Australian Queen of Pop.

"Into the Blue," the lead track and first single, starts the mood for the album immediately: a nice listen, but not kinetic. not as great as other album openers, but good nonetheless. The pockets of  momentary dance segments  proceed with songs "Million Miles" and the '80s-sounding "I Was Gonna Cancel," and some forgettable "sex" tracks. Her cover of Tom Aspaul's "Indiana," renamed to "Feel So Good," is a bubbly electronic ditty that is just as good as the original, a definite highlight of the album.


The songs chug along until the album's conclusion where we are left to feeling "Fine," which is a good bookend to "Into The Blue" and wants you to dance once more.

Not a great set, Kiss Me Once isn't too impressive the first go around - probably barbecue it's been four years since an album of original content and I was anxious - but there are some enjoyable nuggets to listen to second time around. However, this isn't a really danceable album that we expect from her. Is 26 years in the music industry taking a toll on her? She seems so slowed down on this set. Even Madonna is still performing all crazy at her age, so Minogue needs to be just as lively as she was on "Timebomb" and the albums before this.

Album Review: Soundtrack For 'Inside Llewyn Davis' Is Folky Gold Mine.

 

First the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan, brought in a sweeping new audience for bluegrass and traditional American roots music with the Grammy-winning soundtrack for "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" Thirteen years later, and working again with T-Bone Burnett, comes the movie and the accompanying soundtrack to "Inside Llewyn Davis," an album that could spark a resurgence in folk music with new recordings to fit the film's early-'60s Greenwich Village setting.

Starring Oscar Isaac as the title character, "Inside Llewyn Davis" explores the trials and tribulations of Llewyn as he tries to make a solo career for himself from the baskethouses of the Village to Chicago. Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Adam Driver and Stark Sands also star in the film, lending their own voices for live performances in the film and the soundtrack recordings.

I have already written about what I think the Grammy nominees will be in a good chunk of categories come December 6, just guessing on what could be submitted. In a partially leaked submission list posted at www.carriefans.com, some of my guesses have been more or less confirmed.

Of the surprise guesses I made that could be true (based on this list) include rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis submitting "Same Love" for song of the year over "Thrift Shop" (submitted for record of the year) or "Can't Hold Us." The number one song of the summer, "Blurred Lines," was not listed as potential submissions for record or song of the year. Did it not submit at all? Furthermore, Burno Mars did not, allegedly, submit "When I Was Your Man" or "Locked Out of Heaven," for song of the year, but submitted the latter for record of the year.

Grammy Nominations Predictions!!!!

Ladies and gentlemen, the time has come. The Grammy eligibility window for 2012-2013 has ended. Now the fun part begins, guessing how will be nominated for the music industry's highest honor.

Personally, 2013 was one of the worst years in music in recent years. So many songs received notoriety for their scandalous videos ("Blurred Lines" and "Wrecking Ball") or just because another pop princess was back (Gaga's "Applause" and Katy Perry's "Roar'). Through all of the crap there will still be five nominees each in the Grammy's top four categories, but who?

Katy and Gaga are 'Roar'ing with unnecessary 'Applause.'

The two new titans of pop music released their new singles this weekend after being leaked online.

Katy Perry's "Roar" and Lady Gaga's "Applause" made their official launch on radio airwaves and iTunes as the first singles from their upcoming albums due out this fall. "Applause's" release came a week early because of the leak.

Their new albums, Perry's Prism and Gaga's ARTPOP, are due out on October 22 and November 11, respectively.

If these new singles are a taste of things to come, I'm not sure we can hold our breaths for anything spectacular on the albums, especially from Perry. Gaga seems to be pretty comfortable playing with genres and sounds that we may be able to take yet another album from her.

"Roar" is another inspirational track that sounds like Complete Confection leftovers. Lyrically and vocally weak, Perry's strain to sound like she is brand new is nothing refreshing or surprising. Sounding like she's still using her failed marriage to Russell Brand as material for her album, Perry could be slowly morphing into a pop (a second pop?) Taylor Swift. Both artists are weak singers and songwriters, and use relationships for songs. Perry, stick to the crappy bubble gum pop you're used to, even though that's not any better than what you're releasing now.



Gaga, on the other hand, has an OK single that, like Perry's, is lyrically weak. A rushing throwback to the '80s, "Applause" still seems to ride on Madonna's coattails, this new Madonna crap not the fun Madonna ("Give Me All Your Loving," anyone?). This track is like gum, the first minute is bursting with flavor and then you keep on chewing it hoping it gets better. Nope.



If Perry and Gaga are looking to prove themselves as good artists, they're new albums better be great. With the way things are going, they'll be received luke-warmly and get overblown Grammy nods for album of the year.

"Roar" and "Applause" will both be performed at the MTV VMAs on August 25.

Kylie Celebrates 45th Birthday By Dropping Her 'Skirt'

 

Kylie Minogue isn't taking a break on her 45th birthday, letting her her latest single, "Skirt," drop online.

The Australian dance icon revealed the new song on her Twitter today with the message "Birthday Surprise!!!" Producer Nom de Strip uploaded the track to his SoundCloud.

"Skirt" is a drastic EDM turn for the Australian dance icon, incorporating a strong dubstep sound with an up-all-night club beat. The chorus is more familiar territory while still advancing the singer into the evolving EDM scene. Die hard Kylie fans may not know exactly what they're listening to at first, but the track grows on you and makes you move.

"Skirt" is the first new song Minogue has released since "Timebomb" last year, coinciding with the release of her latest compilation album, The Best of Kylie Minogue. "Timebomb" was Minogue's fastest-selling single in the states since "Can't Get You Outta My Head"

With only a month-and-half left in the 2012-2013 Grammy eligibility window, the amount of Grammy-worthy (or at least some overly popular Grammy fare) is really starting to emerge. Upper Darby musician Eric Carbonara is perparing to tour the Midwest with a world re-known classical Indian artist this fall.

Carbonara will be touring with Debashish Bhattacharya, a Grammy-nominated musician known for his traditional Indian music and use of lap slide guitars. Bhattacharya is a 2009 Grammy nominee for best traditional world music album for Calcutta Chronicles.

This is Carbonara’s second tour this year, following a caravan of dates throughout Europe in the spring.

It’s been a year since Amy Winehouse left the world so suddenly. While she appeared to get her life back together, she succumbed to old demons and passed at the age of 27 (joining the infamous celebrity ‘27 club’).

            Winehouse left the world with a soulful, heartfelt repertoire that paved the way for fellow British acts to international stardom, including Duffy, Leona Lewis, and the biggest British act of this generation, Adele.  

            The short time Winehouse spent in the music industry is remarkable, considering she only released two albums, but contributed with so many other notable acts (including Tony Bennett, winning a posthumous Grammy this year for her duet with him).
